Göteborgs Konsthall – en hundraårig konsthistoria

Andréas Hagström (writer and editor)

“Göteborgs Konsthall – en hundraårig konsthistoria” marks the centenary of Göteborgs Konsthall, which has presented exhibitions at Götaplatsen in Gothenburg since 1923.

The book traces the history of the institution from the emergence of public art exhibitions in eighteenth-century Europe, through the Gothenburg Jubilee Exhibition where the space first opened, and on to the present day.

Through archival material, essays and historical perspectives, the publication explores how artistic, social and political movements have shaped the Konsthall and how the institution in turn has influenced art, society and cultural discourse. The story includes artists, exhibitions and staff, as well as visitors, pedagogical work, cultural policy and the development of the city of Gothenburg.

The book is written by Andréas Hagström together with a number of invited authors. Additional contributions include texts by Maria Görts, Louise Wolthers, Kajsa Widegren, Martin Gustavsson and Lisa Rosendahl, while artistic director Stina Edblom and curator Liv Stoltz reflect on the Konsthall’s present work and future directions.

Awarded “Swedish Book Art Award” 2021.
