Björn Larsson

Björn Larsson is an artist and an educator. In his work, which often deals with
nation and nationality seen through stories of nature and landscape, he uses
various documentary strategies where photography is an important tool as well
as a subject in itself. Investment in time leads to long working processes in
several works such as In the Midst of Nature, Brandplats 3, The Unsolved
Riddle of the Stone Troll and Works of Translation. Collaborations with other
artists also characterize Larsson’s many projects. One example is Refuse to
Kill—The Stories of Conscientious Objectors with Carl Johan Erikson, where
they are researching state compensation for citizenship in the form of military
service and the individual’s ability to navigate deep existential questions.
Another example is The Birdcatcher with Sookyoung Huh where the practice of
research travel is visible through the zoologist Sten Bergman’s travels in Korea
in the mid-1930s. Björn Larsson is part of the faculty at the Royal Institute of
Art in Stockholm.
