It Girl
“It Girl” is the first title published by Null & Void Books. The book is made by the Norwegian artist Fredrik Værslev (b. 1979) and centres on Tærtitta, a dog who belonged to the artist and his mother and who passed away in 2013.
The publication shares its format with the colouring book. Across the pages, repetitive drawings and reproductions of Værslev’s Terrazzo paintings appear in shifting variations. The simple structure allows small differences in pattern, colour and repetition to become visible.
“It Girl” draws on an earlier exhibition by the artist in which the works were arranged as a sequence moving through space. In the book this logic becomes a rhythm of pages, where drawings and paintings unfold one after another.
Like the exhibition it refers to, the book can be understood as a kind of catwalk in abstraction, where variations repeat and shift within a fixed structure.
